For centuries Baltistan was a Buddhist - the Baltians are descendants of a Tibetan migration - and vestiges of that time are everywhere.

Today in Baltistan different variants of Islam introduced during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are professed. The population is mostly Chii or Ismaelite, minority confessions in Pakistan where Sunnis are the majority. The inhabitants of the Hushe Valley, on the other hand, are Noorbakhshis, a minority variant of Balti Chiism.
