The education on offer in the Hushe Valley and the importance that has been given to education has been very poor. Up until just a short time ago, the percentage of children that finished primary school didn’t reach 50% and only 25% for girls in school. Nowadays the attitudes regarding education have changed noticeably, and almost all boys and girls attend primary school. Despite the change, the infrastructures continue being few and there are no offers for children with handicaps. In the Hushe Valley, we have seen the case of five deaf-mutes (of course no girls, they don’t exist) and we have proposed to the families to enrol them in a special education school in Skardu.

In Skardu, Aniqa Bano runs a school which teaches deaf-mute children. Aniqa is a teacher paid by the government and has 2 daughters who are deaf-mute. Aware of the total lack on offer for these children, she decided get training in special education in order to teach her daughters, teach them to read and write, to communicate between them, etc.

Today, Aniqa teaches classes in the government school in the mornings, and in the afternoons she takes care of deaf-mute children in her home The Baltistan Foundation wants to offer these children access to education and finance their stay in Skardu and the costs of schooling. You have to take into account that the distance from Machulo to Skardu is equivalent to a three-hour-journey.

Here is the email , in English, sent to the Baltistan Foundation by Aniqa:

Dear Sir, I would like to extend heartiest gratitude to you and the FB organization for the sponsorship of five children from Machulo valley. Three children have joined school and two will be joining today or tomorrow. The three children are with us since Monday of this week. They are now well settled. Attached is some pictures of them on their day of arrival. Will update you as things progress ahead. Seeing development in such children are the most satisfying experience of life. May God keep you healthy, happy and successful. With warm Regards AniqaBano.
